Description of Practice :
Ms. Riemer is a Board Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse, Registered Nurse Consultant and Certified Traumatologist with more then 20 years of clincal experience. Her experiences include: civil and forensic nursing, acute and chronic psychiatric/ mental health, working with both children and adults, and long-term and end of life care. As an experienced clinician, responsibilities have included working as Primary Care, Nurse Manager, Nurse Educator, & Director of Nursing Services. In addition, Ms. Riemer has worked with children and women victims of dometic and intimate partner violence in a shelter setting and on a 24 hour crisis line.
As a Nurse Leader, Ms. Riemer has been recogized by her peers as recipient of the Wisconsin Outstanding Nurse of the year in 2000, The International Association of Forensic Nursing Achievemement Award in 2009, and International Association of Nurses Top Nurse in Madison Wisconsin in 2010. As a pioneer in the development of programming that has reduced violence and trauma by utilizing a combination of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies, programming includes a focus on care providers and consumers partnering together to create a sanctuary (safe place) that promotes recovery. She has published the results of her teams programming in On The Edge: The official news letter of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN). The articles, entitled Application Of Core Strategies: Reducing Selcustion & Restraint, Vol. 13, number 3 and Creating Sanctuary In a Maximum Security Forensic Psychiatric Unit, Vol. 15, number 1, were published in Fall, 2007 & Spring, 2009 respectively.
In addition, as a Certified Traumatologist, Ms. Riemer travels the state to present at conferences and hospitals in order to provide education on topics that include sanctuary, trauma informed care, & therapeutic communication, with the hopes of helping care providers to create a trauma informed, and violent free Wisconsin. Her audiances also include consumers, schools (teachers and students), shelters, and anyone interested in learning how to reduce trauma and violence in any setting.
